Our Local Workout Mecca:
It's time to get started! What is the business like? A 110 year old swimsuit has been turned into a mini city for creative and exercise related businesses. Viva! Z Zumba is the 17th business to move into the building, the business range from boxing, and martial arts to ballet and akido. The building for decades was the site for the Robby Len swimsuit factory, and before that a long forgotten trolley repair shop. When did the first tenants move in? The new “garage style” workout studio CrossFit New Haven was the first tenants to move in May 2010.
Since acquiring the building 3 years ago, the New York based converter of warehouse to loft space is turning the steel and brick building. Which skylight is abounding, into an arcade of exercise spaces and studio space.
The building has two long corridors each 450 feet long, one side is finished with attractive tiles and visible steel beams. With enough tenants the plan is to renovate the parallel corridor and create spaces on the side of the building and connect them into a kind of indoor mall. Was it your plan to make an exercise mecca? The owner Katz said “it was never the business plan to rent so many exercise related businesses, it just worked out that way.
Already there is synergy at work; Roselyn Alteri has said that some parents of a couple kids taking classes in the Brazilian martial arts, Capoeira have expressed interest in taking her class in Zumba. “Well feed off each other” she said. When asked how often do you work out?” Jocelyn Fuentes answered “3-5 days a week is the average for me.” These businesses are making good money and are getting support from each other.
How much does it cost to rent? Katz said on average a 1,000 square feet of space rent cost $750. Where is it located? This building located at 1175 state between Blatchley and James will one day be the best place to rent. This is something that New Haven has needed to help our local businesses.

Meriden Man dies:

Watch Out! On Friday January 6th a 21 year old Meriden man was killed Friday morning, when he was hit by a northbound train Amtrak train, police said. Giovanni Policard of 51 Liberty St. was hit by the train at about 9:46 a.m. near an area where the track goes under the Wilbur Cross Parkway, Wallingford police Lt. Marc Mikulski said. That stretch of railroad tracks runs parallel to 1001 North Colony Road, which is also Route 5.
Policard’s body was taken from the scene more than two hours later to the office of the chief state medical examiner in Farmington. Neither Wallingford nor Amtrak police are commenting on the circumstances of Policard’s death.
Amtrak officials said 25 passengers were on the train, which was traveling from New Haven’s Union Station to Springfield, Mass., when the incident occurred. None of the passengers were injured, according to Amtrak officials. Travelers on trains scheduled to pass through the area were bused around the accident scene. Cliff Cole, an Amtrak spokesman in New York, said normal service on the line was resumed at 1 p.m.

This was not the first time someone has died due to a train, in Wallingford in recent weeks. On December 5th, a woman died after being hit by an Amtrak train near the Meriden line. Police say a northbound Amtrak train bound for Springfield, Mass. struck and killed a woman walking on the train tracks Monday morning near the Meriden border. About 11 a.m., the train engineer reported that his train struck a pedestrian walking on the tracks near the Meriden town line off of Old Colony Road, Wallingford police said.
The adult woman was killed instantly, police say, when she was struck about a tenth of a mile south of the Meriden town line. None of the 37 passengers and crew on the train was injured, according to Amtrak.
Neighbors say people, including children, regularly walk on the train tracks in the area. Normally, the train passes through the area with a couple of quick horn blasts, but this morning there was one sustained blast, said one neighbor of noticing the difference in the normal routine.
In my opinion there should be a fence around both, sides of the tracks with signs saying cross at your own risk. It might cost a couple thousand dollars and some inconvenience but is that worth more then someone’s life?

Leopard Gone Wild In India:
Look Out! A leopard that wandered into a city in eastern India went on a rampage, killing one man, swiping off part of another man’s scalp and injuring three other people before authorities tranquilized the animal. The big cat attacked a 50-year-old lawyer as he talked on his cell phone Sunday evening outside his house. He was rushed to hospital where he died.
Four other people were injured, including a man who had part of his scalp torn off by the animal in a dramatic episode captured by a local newspaper photographer. Gauhati wildlife official Utpal Bora says authorities plan to release the animal at a wildlife park about 120 miles west of the city.

For the people of Guwahati, bomb blasts and other terror attacks were not uncommon till recently, because of repeated attacks by the secessionist United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa), but a leopard straying into a town is rare, particularly during the day. The leopard was first sighted on Saturday morning near a crematorium in the town. "First, it jumped across several multi-storey buildings, including a bank, and then jumped on to the ground," said Manas Paran, photojournalist for the Sunday Indian magazine and an eyewitness.
Local people armed with sticks and iron rods tried to chase the leopard away. The enraged animal then started attacking locals, Mr. Paran told BBC. Deb Kumar Das, aged around 50, was one of the first people whom the leopard clawed at. He suffered severe wounds to the head, ear and neck. He was treated in hospital several others suffered the ire of the big cat. One of them, Kripesh Dey, had part of his scalp removed in the attack.
Later, when the leopard entered a shop, locals locked it up. Forest officials and vets reached the scene after some time with tranquilizers and were able to capture it."After it was tranquilized and treated in Guwahati Zoo, we released it in the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary today", said Utpal Borah, head of the zoo.
This incident has once again brought to fore the conflict between humans and animals in India. Assam's forest officials say humans are encroaching onto leopard habitats. Residential areas built right in leopard habitats have become vulnerable to such attacks. This is the second death from leopard attacks in five years. My opinion on this is that if the leopard wondered into the city before it could come back again and cause harm.

The Costa Concordia Accident:
Stop the presses! On Friday, Schettino was accused by the liner owner's boss of misleading the company and crew after hitting the rocks. CEO Pierluigi Foschi told Italian state TV that the company spoke to the captain 20 minutes after the ship ran aground at 9:45pm local time.
He said they could not offer proper assistance because the captain's description "did not correspond to the truth."
Schettino said only that he had "problems" on board -but did not mention hitting a reef. Likewise, Foschi said crew members were not informed of the gravity of the situation. Passenger video shown on Italian TV showed crew members apparently telling the 4,200 passengers on board the $450 million ship to go to their cabins as late as 10:25 p.m. local time the night of the wreck. The abandon ship alarm sounded just before 11:00p.m.
The search for 21 people still missing in the Costa Concordia shipwreck resumed Thursday amid reports the captain was seen dining with a mystery woman - who may have been on board illegally --shortly before the liner crashed off the Italian coast.
The woman is believed to be Domnica Cemortan, a 25-year-old Moldovan, thought to be the same blonde woman seen dining with Capt. Francesco Schettino Friday evening, almost an hour before the ship struck a reef, killing at least 11 people.
The ship, operated by Genoa-based Costa Cruises and owned by Carnival Corporation, was carrying more than 4,200 people when it struck a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio late Friday.
Schettino made an unauthorized diversion from his programmed route and strayed into the perilous waters. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported on Monday that he may have sailed close to the rocky shores of Giglio to please his head waiter who comes from the island.
Officials and witnesses said earlier that the disaster may have been caused by a risky practice of close-passing the island of Giglio in a foghorn-blasting salute to the local population.
