Our Local Workout Mecca:

It's time to get started! What is the business like? A 110 year old swimsuit has been turned into a mini city for creative and exercise related businesses. Viva! Z Zumba is the 17th business to move into the building, the business range from boxing, and martial arts to ballet and akido. The building for decades was the site for the Robby Len swimsuit factory, and before that a long forgotten trolley repair shop. When did the first tenants move in? The new “garage style” workout studio CrossFit New Haven was the first tenants to move in May 2010.

Since acquiring the building 3 years ago, the New York based converter of warehouse to loft space is turning the steel and brick building. Which skylight is abounding, into an arcade of exercise spaces and studio space.

The building has two long corridors each 450 feet long, one side is finished with attractive tiles and visible steel beams. With enough tenants the plan is to renovate the parallel corridor and create spaces on the side of the building and connect them into a kind of indoor mall. Was it your plan to make an exercise mecca? The owner Katz said “it was never the business plan to rent so many exercise related businesses, it just worked out that way.

How big is the entire space? As a joke someone brought in a toy scooter to get more quickly from one of the football field size corridor to the other. “The building screams creativity “says Salinas, who expressed satisfaction that Katz is renting to creative businesses. Even all of the exercise studios have a creative feeling, said Salinas “The landlord is smart who he’s renting to.”

Already there is synergy at work; Roselyn Alteri has said that some parents of a couple kids taking classes in the Brazilian martial arts, Capoeira have expressed interest in taking her class in Zumba. “Well feed off each other” she said. When asked how often do you work out?” Jocelyn Fuentes answered “3-5 days a week is the average for me.” These businesses are making good money and are getting support from each other.

How much does it cost to rent? Katz said on average a 1,000 square feet of space rent cost $750. Where is it located? This building located at 1175 state between Blatchley and James will one day be the best place to rent. This is something that New Haven has needed to help our local businesses.
